The most common and economical plating. Good corrosion resistance when not exposed to excessive moisture. Zinc is electrically deposited onto the surface of the fastener by immersing in a plating bath and applying an electrical current. A chromate film is then applied (either clear or blue) to seal the surface and further increase the corrosion protection. Commercial zinc clear is 0.0002" (5 microns) minimum thickness.
Note: Hardened fasteners will need to be baked to reduce the chance of hydrogen embrittlement.
Zinc & Wax: Clear zinc with the addition of a wax lubricant for ease of assembly. This is used on most thread rolling screws as well as prevailing torque lock nuts.
Application: Standard plating used on most threaded fasteners and washers.
Appearance: Shiny silver. Can be iridescent.
